SolCol Sunday Reading Group: Nancy Fraser

This Sunday we're reading Nancy Fraser's short article 'Behind Marx's Hidden Abode.' In the article Fraser develops an expanded understanding of capitalism; looking at the links between capitalism as an economic system and gendered relations, nationalism and ecology. If you're interested in left wing thought, the article serves as a great starting place, providing theoretical tools for systematising different strands of left activism the Fraser can be found here: libs.uga.edu/reserves/docs/scanner%20pc%20shelter/ill%20scans/harris_behindmarxs.pdf As usual, the event is open to all, regardless of whether you have attended events before and whether you have a background knowledge of theory. There will be a brief…

Political Freshers’ Week: Power & Privilege in Organising Spaces

MEETING LINK: https://meet.google.com/tai-tpca-fyn Campaigning within student groups can foster a brilliant community but it’s also important to treat our organising spaces carefully and understand the different power dynamics that affect our personal relationships. Come and discuss how we understand our power/privileges and can use this to make all organising environments safe and welcoming. Political Freshers’ Week is an event run collaboratively by different campaigns from the Cambridge Student Union. It will be two…

SolCol Sunday Discussion Group: Stand Up For Your Future University

DISCUSSION LINK: https://meet.google.com/dai-hsmg-rqj Solidarity College was founded during the 2020 Old Schools Occupation, called in support of the ongoing struggle of UCU striking staff against a University Management that continues to restructure the University for profit and power at the expense of its staff and students. Here we planted some seeds for what we hoped would become a radical, non-hierarchical, liberatory space of mutual learning. The reading and discussion groups which have flourished over lockdown and then summer since the occupation have been a step in this direction - but we want to take a moment to look ahead. What…
